Canadian Beauty Journal was founded on the idea that beauty coverage should be trustworthy enough to act on. Too much of what passes for product journalism is written in close partnership with the companies it covers. We wanted something different: comparative testing conducted at arm’s length from the industry it examines, with results reported plainly, including when a product falls short.

Every product we feature is purchased anonymously through ordinary retail channels — the same way any reader would buy it. We do not accept complimentary samples for review, and we do not accept payment, discounts, or other consideration in exchange for coverage or favourable placement. There are no sponsored rankings in this magazine. When a brand advertises with us, that relationship is kept entirely separate from editorial decisions, and advertisers have no input into what we test or how we describe our findings.

Our testing draws on established methods from dermatology and cosmetic science, adapted for consumer comparison: controlled application, defined wear periods, and criteria set before testing begins rather than adjusted afterward to suit a particular result.

Our Review Committee

Findings that touch on skin health, ingredient behaviour, or formulation science are reviewed by an independent committee that includes a dermatologist, a biochemist specializing in topical formulation, and a cosmetic physician with clinical research experience. This committee does not select which products we test, and its members have no commercial relationship with the brands under review. Its role is narrower and, we think, more useful: to check that our methodology is sound, that our conclusions are supported by what the testing actually showed, and that any claims involving skin, hair, or nail health are described accurately. Committee members are not named in individual articles, in keeping with our policy of keeping personal endorsement separate from editorial judgment.

Getting in Touch

We welcome corrections, and we take them seriously. If you believe we have made an error of fact, misdescribed how a product performed, or overlooked something relevant to a comparison, please let us know through the contact page. We also welcome suggestions for categories or product types you would like to see tested. Every message is read by a member of the editorial team, and corrections that affect a published piece are addressed directly, with an update to the article where warranted.
